That little garlic sauce cup somehow disappears faster than the pizza every single time 😂
This homemade copycat Papa John’s garlic sauce recipe is rich, buttery, creamy, and packed with garlicky flavor. It tastes insanely close to the famous dipping sauce, but honestly? Fresh homemade garlic butter just hits different.
Perfect for pizza crust, breadsticks, fries, wings, roasted potatoes… or eating straight from the spoon. No judgment.
You only need about 5 minutes of prep time and another 5 minutes to cook the sauce. The recipe makes enough for around 4–6 servings depending on how serious everyone is about dipping their pizza crust 😂
Ingredients

Instructions
- Melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Once fully melted, add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Keep the heat low so the garlic doesn’t brown or become bitter.
- Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mixing both fresh garlic and garlic powder gives the sauce a richer flavor and helps recreate that classic pizza dipping sauce taste.
- Sprinkle in the flour and whisk continuously for about 1 minute. This helps create a smoother, creamier texture instead of a thin melted butter sauce.
- Slowly pour in the milk while whisking to keep everything smooth. Continue cooking for another 2–3 minutes, stirring often, until the sauce thickens slightly and becomes glossy and creamy.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the sauce sit for 1–2 minutes. It thickens a little more as it cools. If you want the sauce even richer, stir in a little extra melted butter before serving.
- Serve warm with pizza, breadsticks, chicken wings, fries, or roasted potatoes. I personally love dipping crispy pizza crust into the warm buttery garlic sauce while the pizza’s still fresh out of the oven

Tips
- Fresh garlic gives the best flavor, but garlic powder is what helps create that classic copycat taste.
- Low heat is important — high heat can make buttery sauces separate.
- Want it cheesier? Add a spoonful of parmesan while the sauce is warm.
- If the sauce gets too thick after cooling, whisk in a splash of warm milk.
